This paperweight depicts Hokusai’s famous wave, transposed into three dimensions by superimposing four millefiori.

Made from around a hundred candies patiently assembled by hand, they subtly blend blue, black, and white, evoking the depth of the mysterious and fascinating marine waters.

The blue, in particular, echoes the Prussian blue used by Hokusai in his prints. Highly innovative for the time, this color had just been imported from Europe and introduced to Japan.

The movement of the wave is divided into two phases: in the foreground, the wave emerges and still maintains a reasonable size. Behind it, the wave unfolds fully, in all its vigor, ready to plunge back into the turbulent water.

Visible from the front and back, this wave is fully revealed before our eyes, displaying all its magnitude and power. Between the waves appear two slender boats, a reminder of the place of humanity in the face of powerful nature. These are shaped with a blowtorch from a yellow crystal rod.

The whole is fixed in a clear crystal cylinder, itself encased in a cap combining flannel, white enamel, and clear crystal. Combined with the circular shape of the paperweight, large concave beads cut on both sides of the cylinder reinforce the sensation of the wave’s movement and accompany the waves in an infinite rolling motion.

Thus, although the paperweight remains motionless thanks to its flat base, its decoration comes to life. The “The Wave” paperweight is a numbered and limited edition of 88 pieces.

PAPERWEIGHT HISTORY :

Today, Saint-Louis crystal is the only one that still creates these precious sulphides. As early as the 16th century, Murano’s glassmakers made glass balls in which they trapped twisted rods and multicoloured ribbons. The first paperweight signed by Saint-Louis was not created until 1845. Follow the creations of the Baccarat and many others. The infatuation is immediate and the vogue lasts until 1860. Production then declined and ceased towards the end of the century.

From time immemorial, the paperweight intrigues, questions and excites. These little glass balls are part of the history of French glassware. Collectors include Queen Victoria, Empress Eugenie, King Farouk, and Jeanne Lanvin
