Son of a carpenter from France, Pompon went to Paris at the age of fifteen to learn drawing and sculpture. He became the practitioner of Rodin, while creating personal works like portraits, literary subjects and so on.
It is only in 1888 that, by observing the silhouette of a goose coming off in the light, he has the intuition to render it as a simplified sculpture by smoothing its forms, thus giving up the realistic rendering of the coat and feathers. Pompon always observes the living beast, multiplying studies and sketches in Paris at the Jardin des Plantes or on Norman farms while drawing inspiration from Egyptian or Japanese Art.
At 67, Pompon has a resounding success with his life-size Polar Bear, exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1922, which has become one of the world’s most popular sculptures over time. Other creations such as the Brown Bear or the Young Owl have also become emblematic pieces of François Pompon’s style.
